Numerical analysis of microwave assisted thermocatalytic decomposition of methane

assisted thermocatalytic decomposition of methane with activated carbon as the catalyst. A simple reaction kinetic model for methane conversion (accounting for catalyst deactivation)is developed from previously published experimental data and coupled with the governing equations for the microwaves, heat transfer, mass transfer and fluid flow physics. Temperature distribution and concentration profiles of CH4 & H2 in the catalyst bed are presented. The temperature profiles at different input power values predict a nonuniform temperature distribution with hot-spots near the top and bottom of the catalyst. The concentration profiles predict a linear variation of CH4 and H2 concentration along the length of the reactor and show a good agreement with experimental conversion values. The influence of volumetric hourly space velocity on methane conversion is also investigated

En la extensa colección de la Revista de Filosofía (Buenos Aires, 1915 - 1929) hay algunos artículos cuyo tema es la historia, la sociedad o la cultura en la América Hispana colonial. Si bien el número de estos artículos no es dominante en relación con otros temas de esa publicación, interesa esclarecer qué clase de mirada ofrece la revista sobre ese campo del saber, sobre todo teniendo en consideración que el perfil ideológico de la publicación es predominantemente cientificista y modernizador. En consecuencia, la mirada sobre el mundo colonial americano, presente en estos trabajos, amerita ser analizada y sistematizada para establecer su función en el seno de la publicación así como las relaciones mutuas y jerarquías de las disciplinas desde las cuales se aborda la cuestión.The aim of this paper is to analize the Revista de Filosofía collection (Buenos Aires, 1915 - 1929). In this journal, there are some articles devoted to the study of the history, the society or the culture in the Colonial Spanish America. The number of the articles on this topic is lower than the number of other themes, because the ideological orientation of the review is modern and scientific. Modernity and its Shadows in some Rubén Darío's Tales

El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es analizar algunos cuentos de Rubén Darío, especialmente la “Historia prodigiosa de la princesa Psiquia” y “Huitzilopoxtli”, para deslindar algunos aspectos de la visión crítica que Darío ofrece en ellos acerca del proceso de racionalización moderna. En el primero, nos centramos en los aspectos fáusticos con que es diseñado el personaje de la princesa Psiquia –contracara de la princesa triste de la célebre “Sonatina”– así como en la reflexión de corte gnoseológico sobre el conocimiento y sus límites, en la que se ven involucrados saberes de diverso tenor, desde la moderna filología hasta las ciencias ocultas. En el segundo, nos detenemos en el sentido atribuido a la revolución mexicana, como un episodio histórico moderno que es leído en clave de invocación de divinidades primitivas y crueles. En ambos casos, encontramos que hay un patrón interpretativo sobre las posibilidades y límites de la modernidad así como una puesta en escena de las derivas inesperadas de los procesos modernos de secularización.The aim of this paper is to analyse some tales written by Rubén Darío: the “Historia prodigiosa de la princesa Psiquia” and “Huitzilopoxtli”. Our interest is to understand Darío's critical vision of the modern rationalization process. In the first one, we study the character of Princess Psiquia –a variation of the sad princess of the “Sonatina”–, her faustic traits and the gnoseological reflection on knowledge and its boundaries, a reflection that involves modern philology and occultism. In the second one, we pay attention to the Mexican Revolution, a historical and modern event presented as an invocation to primitive and cruel deities. In both cases, we found a common interpretative pattern on the modernity possibilities and limits, and an exhibition of the unexpected results of the secularization modern process.Fil: Fernandez, Cristina Beatriz. El uso científico de la palabra poética. Modernismo y biopolítica en un caso de la revista 'Archivos'

En el año 1908 se publicó en revista Archivos de Psiquiatría, Criminología y Ciencias Afines, de Buenos Aires, un breve poemario erótico de marcadas resonancias modernistas que había sido escrito por un alienado, quien había muerto en un sanatorio de la misma ciudad. A partir del análisis de estos textos y la revista en la que se publicaron, nos interesa observar el uso científico de la palabra poética: su función como indicio de la enfermedad mental, en sintonía con el debate de finales de siglo XIX acerca del decadentismo y del lugar de la poesía en la sociedad urbana moderna.In 1908, a brief collection of erotic poems was published at the review Archivos de Psiquiatría, Criminología y Ciencias Afines, in Buenos Aires. These poems were inspired by the modernista aesthetics and were written by a mentally-ill person, who died in the same city, in a mental hospital. Benito Juarez’s “Scientific” Demythologizing: Race and Secularization in Francisco Bulnes’ Biographical Writings

El artículo está dedicado al libro de Francisco Bulnes El verdadero Juárez y la verdad sobre la Intervención y el Imperio (1904). Esa biografía cuestionaba la imagen consagrada del expresidente Juárez que, para ese entonces, funcionaba como un nexo simbólico entre liberales de diversas tendencias y era una figura icónica de la modernización mexicana. Si bien la polémica sobre Benito Juárez ha sido abordada anteriormente, en especial por estudios historiográficos, el artículo propone analizar ciertos mecanismos retóricos y discursivos de la escritura de Bulnes que funcionan como tópicos que sostienen su argumentación. En primer lugar, el hecho de que, a pesar del dato biográfico de que Juárez había pasado del mundo oral zapoteca a posiciones de prestigio en la sociedad letrada y política mexicana, Bulnes se apoya en apreciaciones seudocientíficas acerca de la raza para explicar rasgos de la conducta y la personalidad de Juárez. En segundo término, el desarrollo de una exposición de pretensiones sociológicas tendiente a demostrar que esos mismos componentes raciales del sujeto biografiado eran inescindibles de su religiosidad y que esa religiosidad, en su versión católica, era inherente al pueblo mexicano y había propiciado, a fin de cuentas, el culto a Juárez. El proceso de desmitificación de ese culto a Juárez efectuado por Bulnes presenta, entonces, dos ejes interrelacionados: el componente racial y la persistencia de formas pre-seculares de pensamiento que, muy a pesar de las figuras y eventos históricos celebrados por la nación liberal, subyacían en el proceso de modernización mexicanoThis paper is devoted to the book written by Francisco Bulnes, El verdadero Juárez y la verdad sobre la Intervención y el Imperio (1904). It is a biography that questions the former president Juarez’s consecrated image which, by that time, was a symbolic nexus for liberals from different tendencies, an iconic figure of the Mexican modernization. The controversy around Benito Juarez was studied before us, primarily by historians. Nevertheless, this article proposes to analyze some rethorical and discoursive features of Bulnes’ writing, which function as topics in his argument. First, the biographical datum of Juarez having past from the oral zapoteca culture to a prestigious position in the political and literate Mexican society is turned into a seudoscientific explanation based on race to understand his behaviour and personality. Second, the development of a sociological exposition which tries to demonstrate that the same racial features were related to Juarez religiosity. According to Bulnes, this religiosity, specially catholic, was inherent to Mexican people and it had contributed to the extablishment of Juarez’s worship. Bulnes develops a demytholozing process of this worship supported by two intermingled axis: the racial component and the persistence of pre-secular thinking ways which underlay the Mexican modernization process, in spite of the personalities and historical events celebrated by the liberal nation.Fil: Fernandez, Cristina Beatriz. New functionalisation chemistry of 2- and 4-pyridones and related heterocycles

New methodology for the synthesis of several 4H-pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidin-4-ones has been developed from commercially available 2-aminopyridines and β-oxo esters catalysed by Montmorillonite under solvent-free conditions in good yields. This methodology was expanded for the synthesis of 4H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidin-4-one derivatives from 2-aminopyrimidine and different β-keto esters. The new methodology for the synthesis of N-alkylated 6-methyl 2-pyridones and N-alkylated 2-methyl 4-pyridones, from commercially available starting materials was developed. For the synthesis of N-alkylated 6-methyl 2-pyridones, 2-methoxy-6-methyl pyridine and a number of different alkylating reagents have been employed as starting materials. For the synthesis of N-alkylated 2-methyl 4-pyridones, 4-chloro 2-methyl pyridine was used successfully to make the desired pyridone in 3 steps. Selective mono-metallation at the 6-methyl substituent of N-alkylated 6-methyl 2-pyridones and N-alkylated 2-methyl 4-pyridones with n-BuLi/KHMDS at -78 °C proceeded smoothly, and the reactivity of the lithiated intermediates towards a wide range of electrophile (diketones, aldehydes, alkylating reagents) was studied. A straightforward synthesis of desirable 4H-quinolizin-4-one scaffolds by condensation of N-benzyl 6-methyl 2-pyridones with dicarbonyl compounds, and the formation of the desired quinolizinone after the condensation step was achieved. An unexpected quinolizinone bearing a fused β-lactam ring was isolated and its structure confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis

Numerical investigation of microwave-assisted pyrolysis of lignin

A comprehensive three-dimensional mathematical model is developed for studying the microwave-assisted pyrolysis of biomass. Kraft Lignin is considered as biomass feedstock in the model, and a mixture of lignin and char, is used as the sample for pyrolysis. A lumped kinetic model which considers three lumped pyrolysis products (gas, liquid and remaining solid fractions) is coupled with the governing equations for the microwave field, heat transfer, mass transfer, Darcy fluid flow and a transient numerical analysis is performed. The distribution of electric field in the microwave cavity, and the distribution of electric field, temperature, and pyrolysis products within the lignin sample are presented. The lignin sample is predicted to undergo volumetric heating when subjected to microwave heating. Accordingly the reaction zone extends from the center of the biomass sample bed towards the outer surface. Preliminary evaluation of the applicability of the model for assessing the effect of different parameters on the microwave pyrolysis of lignin is also carried out
